The ban on booking flights to Maldives has now been lifted. All bookings for flights to Maldives can now be done through EaseMyTrip from every city in India. This “indefinite” ban was thought to have been dropped at some point in January.
Travel company EaseMyTrip has resumed flight bookings from Indian cities to Maldives quietly, after just a few months of halting all flight bookings to the island nation on January 8, 2024.
The first travel company that partnered with social media warriors is EaseMyTrip because three ministers from the Maldives made defamatory statements about India shortly after PM Modi spent two days in Lakshadweep on January 2, 2024, and posted a few photos of the place’s beauty on his social media handles.
EaseMyTrip starts reservations for trips to the Maldives
Anyone traveling to the Maldives now can book their flights using the EaseMyTrip site from any main Indian city. It appears that this “indefinite ban” imposed earlier in January may have been removed. However, it should be noted that there is no official statement issued by EaseMyTrip concerning this development.
The behavior of three ministers who spoke insultingly caused strong condemnation against Maldives by India particularly on Twitter and Facebook platforms.
Some Indians even canceled trips to Maldives due to these derogatory remarks while some others went as far as prohibiting any air travel arrangements via Ease My Trip website altogether.
EaseMyTrip’s message “Nation First, Business Later”
There was a time when Indians were anti the Maldives but lately, it has died down and EaseMyTrip quietly started accepting bookings for flights to Maldives again without making any official announcements.
This sudden ban went viral on social media in January 2024 after the travel company executed it. It even sent a message over WhatsApp to its users explaining its “Nation First, Business Later” stance, as to why it’s banning flight booking to Maldives.
Although Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) apologized to EaseMyTrip CEO Nishant Pitti in an open letter back in January, Pitti did not have a second thought about the ban and said that “Starting Jan 8th, we have indefinitely suspended all travel bookings to Maldives.
For us, our nation takes precedence over profit…We are immensely proud of India’s stunning beaches.” The firm also unveiled discount coupons named “NATIONFIRST” and “BHARATFIRST”.
After these announcements by the CEO, the company’s stocks saw a noticeable surge. Many had called out the company’s move as a PR activity to bank on the sentiments of Indians.
