A bus fell into a deep gulch killing more than 21 people and injuring 40 others at the Tanda area of Akhnoor city in Jammu and Kashmir State on Thursday.
It was carrying passengers from Hathras, Uttar Pradesh. They were traveling from Jammu to reach Shiv Khori Shrine located in Reasi District.
The bus fell into a gorge near Kali Dhar Mandir on the Jammu-Poonch highway.
Injured people were taken to a local hospital in Akhnoor and Government Medical College in Jammu.
The district magistrate of Jammu, in a statement, announced that “a bus from Hathras, Uttar Pradesh which was carrying passengers has met with an accident near Tanda, Akhnoor in Jammu. The rescue operation is going on.”

The prime minister of India expressed his sadness over the demise and said the following words; “I am greatly saddened by this occurrence and loss of life caused by a bus disaster at Akhnoor. My heart goes out to those who are bereaved. I pray for the quick recovery of those injured.”
He also added, “Each dead person due to the bus accident will be awarded Rs 2 lakhs while the injured ones will get Rs 50,000.”
