According to Khalapur police station’s senior inspector, all the students were from different colleges. They planned to trek Sondai Fort which is located at Sondaiwadi and comprised 22 boys and 15 girls respectively.
They climbed up to the fort by 10 am and came down at around 1.30 pm. When they got down, they decided to dive into the Dhavari River reservoir that had been constructed by Sai Sansthan at approximately 2:30 p.m.
“A WhatsApp group was made after which these learners themselves arranged for this visit. They have been doing adventurous trips since then,” Deputy Superintendent of Police Vikram Kadam, Khalapur division said.
Singh’s father said, “From my point of view it was a compulsory NCC trip. That is what he told me. He would have been turning 18 on July 1st.” Banda’s father went on to say,” Last month he had informed me about the trip but I told him not to go. He explained that it was from NCC and it was compulsory.
Not even a cent had been availed to him by me as well. I do not know who took them there at all. My calls are not being picked up at all by these NCC sirs.” The students had boarded a luxury bus for the journey.

“As they were resting near the water body, Singh quickly jumped into the water without knowing its depth; when he began drowning, other students shouted for help after which another three boys jumped to save him but could not do deep swimming due to their inability to swim within that condition of things.
There wasn’t much current but there was more depth than usual. It is hard for someone who can only swim basics,” Kadam said.
According to Maharashtra Police, Sondai Fort is a tourist place whereas Reservoir is not.“There is no indication of any prohibition about entry into the reservoir. I wish members of the public, especially during rainy season should avoid venturing into such waters whose currents and depths are unknown”, he added.
