From the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival, Anasuya Sengupta became the first Indian actress to win an acting award she was selected as the best actor for her role in The Shameless.

Alia Bhatt posted on her Instagram Stories to congratulate Anasuya. “Congratulations once again,” she wrote tagging her Instagram handle. Bhumi Pednekar and Samantha Ruth Prabhu also shared the same post on their Instagram Stories following suit.

Huma Qureshi also congratulated Anasuya and said, “Making us all proud.” Hansal Mehta lauded the actress while Zoya Akhtar also congratulated India on its historical victory.

Following her historic victory, Anasuya gave an interview to reporters. “I am overwhelmed by the outpouring of love from many people back home; it’s amazing, I’m just proud to be able to make everyone happy. I am literally in a taxi on the plane going home to my family right now and I can’t wait,” she said.
The festival’s website states that The Shameless’ official logline interprets it as follows; “When everybody is asleep at night, Renuka is seen escaping from a Delhi brothel after killing a police officer.
She finds sanctuary among northern Indian sex workers where she comes across Devika, a young girl doomed to prostitution for life. Their connection turns into an illicit love affair.
