District Collector of Kallakurichi, MS Prasanth, confirmed that more than 30 people died and over 100 were hospitalized after taking “fake” alcohol in Tamil Nadu.
In addition to women, most of the deceased had undergone a postmortem examination.
The police of Tamil Nadu have detained Govindaraj alias Kannukutty who was selling liquor. Moreover, he had with him around two hundred liters of spirits. Methanol was detected upon subsequent tests on these samples, according to the government’s statement.
Following this incident, Chief Minister MK Stalin has asked for a CB-CID inquiry into it. In addition, Sravan Kumar Jatavath who is the Kallakurichi District Collector in the DMK government has been moved and Superintendent of Police Samay Singh Meena suspended.

Chief Minister MK Stalin’s Statement
“I was shocked and saddened to hear the news of the deaths of people who had consumed adulterated liquor in Kallakurichi. Those involved in the crime have been arrested in this matter. Action has also been taken against the officials who failed to prevent it. Immediate action will be taken if the public informs about those involved in such crimes. Such crimes that ruin the society will be suppressed with an iron fist,” Mk Stalin wrote on X Post.
According to officials, on June 18 some men mostly daily wage laborers from Karunapuram in Kallakurichi district had consumed alleged counterfeit liquor packets and sachets.
By evening most started complaining about symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, stomachache, and irritation in their eyes. Thereupon they were rushed to the hospitals.

Opposition targets MK Stalin’s government
In the meantime, the opposition parties have criticized the DMK’s government for this matter. The leader of the opposition in Tamil Nadu, Edappadi K Palaniswami said that DMK has failed to curb illicit liquor and resulted in many deaths due to it.
BJP state president K Annamalai also sought the dismissal of Minister for Prohibition and Excise S Muthusamy for dereliction of duty.
Moreover, Governor RN Ravi rebuked the government in these terms: “From time to time, there are reports of tragic loss of lives resulting from consumption of illicit liquor in different parts of our state.”
He said that “these incidents indicate continued lapses on the part of enforcing authorities towards prevention of manufacturing and sale of illicit liquor over a period. This is worrisome.”
