Will the Cyclone Remal strike Bangladesh or West Bengal coasts at midnight on 26th May? On Friday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the “depression” over the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm over the east-central Bay of Bengal by the morning of May 25.
What does Remal mean?
The newest cyclone will go by the name Remal. The word means ‘sand’ in Arabic. It was suggested by Oman.
Which part of India will be affected by Cyclone Remal?
In West Bengal, as soon as Cyclone Remal lands, it will affect the coastal districts very fast. These may include Dakshin (South) and 24 Pargana, Purba Medinipur and Howrah, Hoogli and Kolkata as well as Nadia. In addition, this scientist from IMD has explained that first effect will occur in coastal districts.

Where are rain alerts and warnings issued due to Cyclone Remal?
West Bengal: Light to moderate rainfall is present in most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated places over coastal districts of West Bengal on May 26 and 27.
Some parts of coastal districts might receive extremely heavy rainfall on May 26. There can be downpours till May 28

Odisa: Heavy rain is expected from May 25 to 26 in the north coastal parts of Odisha.
North East: On May, 26 it may rain heavily in Mizoram, Tripura, and south Manipur with light to moderate rainfall whereas on May 27 and May 28 the Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, and Tripura are expected to have extremely heavy rainfall would fall over Assam and Meghalaya on May 27 and 28th, Arunachal Pradesh on May 28th; while the second two states would receive that kind of downpour on May 27th.
Storm warning: The firm also predicts a possible rise in sea levels during this time which could be as high as one meter above normal tidal waves along the low-lying areas of Bangladesh.
Areas likely to be damaged by Cyclone Remal
South & North Twenty Four Parganas districts of West Bengal will encounter some damage according to IMD.
The Tree Uprooting: The Met Office expects the uprooting of trees, disruption of power lines due to tree falling, traffic jams induced by water logging and heavy showers, squally wind causing visibility problems reduced, inundation into low laying regions localized flooding caused by storm surge, crop destructions throughout fields, houses made from mud walls.
