Should Muizzu come to India it could be a significant move towards thawing relations between the two time-tested allies. In May 2014, one of Muizzu’s predecessors Abdullah Yameen had attended Modi’s oath ceremony.
India-Maldives relationship turned sour after Muizzu ascended the throne in November 2023. He asked to withdraw military personnel from Maldives. While contesting elections he was against India.
BJP-led National Democratic Alliance won with a margin of 293 seats in Indian general elections. The Opposition’s INDIA bloc won 234 seats.
